You've probably seen on social media that today, April 2, is Equal Pay Day. The date marks how far into 2019 women have to work to finally earn as much money as men earned just in 2018. There is, however, a very important caveat to this date; it's calculated by averaging the earnings of all women — black women, Latina women, Asian women, Indigenous women, white women, and all other demographic groups.
That means, in reality, there are multiple Equal Pay Days, as explained in a Fortune article published this morning. It also means that, when talking about the gender pay gap, we must remember that the commonly used statistic of women only making 77¢ to a man's dollar refers to white women's earnings. In the infographic below, the AAUW breaks down the gender pay disparity by race.

With these statistics in mind, let’s make sure we highlight the other Equal Pay Days of 2019:
- March 5, 2019: the day that Asian women finally earned as much as men in 2018
- April 19, 2019: the day that white women finally earn as much as men in 2018
- August 22, 2019: the day that black women finally earn as much as men in 2018
- September 23, 2019: the day that Indigenous women finally earn as much as men in 2018
- November 20, 2019: the day that Latina women finally earn as much as men in 2018
One step in closing the gender pay gap is to advocate for yourself and negotiate your salary. In addition to intersectional statistics, the AAUW offers free salary negotiation workshops through their Start Smart and Work Smart programs. You can attend these workshops in person across the country or online from the comfort of your own home. For my fellow Bostonian ladies, I've rounded up the upcoming free AAUW salary negotiation workshops (and a few other pay and finance related events) below.
And to close, I want to leave you with this gif of Rihanna, sharing a mantra for today on Equal Pay Day and every other day of the year:
